It all started with the rope …
In 1863 the cord and lace com-pany Edelmann and Ridder was founded by Julius Edelmann and Carl Ridder in Isny in the Allgäu region of southern Ger-many. Along with standard lace products other technical cords were developed and in 1880 the company presented the first silk braided fishing lines. EDELRID was making ropes for mountaineering but made its mark in the climbing world with the development of the Kern-mantel rope, a revolution-ary and significant breakthrough in climbing safety in the early 1950s.
This Kernmantel rope construction was developed by EDELRID and has been the basis for the construction of all modern ropes ever since. The term “kernmantel”, which was “coined” back then by the developers, has been adopted in several foreign languages and has become a standard technical term for modern day climbing ropes.
The continued research and development at EDELRID led to major breakthroughs in raising the safety of climbing in other key areas.
In the 1970s, the harness to have was the braided four- or six-layer EDELRID chest harness which was the first ground-breaking move away from tying directly into the rope with loops around the waist. conducted over many years. This formed the basis for the construction of the modern day sit harnesses. The award-winning Ultralight helmet which for many years has been a winner in practical tests conducted by many magazines worldwide, offers a level of safety which far exceeds the required standards. All EDELRID products are the result of intensive research, tests, both laboratory and in the field EDELRID isn’t just a sport company. We have two other important market sectors in technical industrial products and work safety.
EDELRID started as a technical manufacturer of small and large cordage for various industrial usages and today we produce braided tube products for medicine, machines, hi-fi and industrial use as well as technical braids for the automobile and space industry, to name a few areas. Work safety has grown from EDELRID’s mountaineering expertise in the 1990s, finding solutions to work safety problems. We now have a wide range of harnesses for several industrial areas ranging from fire service to tree surgery.
EDELRID is part of the English Rope Company Ltd. since January 2001.
EDELRID’s core products, ropes, harnesses and helmets are produced exclusively in Isny, Germany.
