I have a quick inquiry for those out there that are in the know. I''m trying to figure out for a competition I''m taking some Cadets to if they are allowed to substitute the Alpine Butterfly for the Wireman''s knot in an Army one rope bridge. They seem like they are the exact same thing to me just tied differently. Seems to me the the Alpine Butterfly holds a lot better with the type of rope we have to use for competition.(7/16" three strand with a right-hand lay) Is there any actual difference between the two knots? If I can get some "ammo" from you guys to take to the board they might allow the Alpine Butterfly in place of the Wireman''s. Got anything for me? Would be much obliged.
i can't tell you anything about regulations for cadets, but i can tell you that the alpine butterfly has been shown to be the strongest inline 3 point knot. the advantage that the wireman's holds over the butterfly is that it binds down on itself well (which is also a disadvantage when it comes time to pull your rig apart). i use the butterfly frequently and prefer it over the wiremans.
