Is there any reason to think carabiners would fail if clipped directly together? It is generally discouraged, but is there any evidence that doing so is problematic? An example would be clipping two quick draws together to create a longer runner.
i don't have a solid answer for you on this one. some manufacturers are avidly against it. others make no statement to that effect. i don't do it simply because of potential torsional strains & a much better chance of gate flutter causing catastrophic failure with rigid metal-to-metal contact (i.e. they can become unclipped more easily). i carry shoulder-length runner that i will either use as a regular draw, or extend as needed. it works great and doesn't have the potentially higher force impact (gate flutter) & torsional strains as 'biner chains. i CAN tell you for sure though, that i have never seen conclusive testing one way or the other.
however, for more information, a conversation from 2007 on RC.com comes to mind (thread entitled "carabiner on carabiner, and triaxial loading")... http://www.rockclimbing.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=1660889;page=1;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=25;

My concern would be the potential for disaster. They aren't designed to be used in that manner and the risk isn't worth it when you can get the extension you need with a $6.50 sling/runner.
If you potentially fall and one of the carabiners gets cross loaded you're done for and the risk just isn't worth it.
