Good question! When a piton is being driven in it will make a ping sound and as it gets tighter, the ping will become less pinging sounding and more dull. Hope this helps.
Driving piton sound varies according to the types of rock and moisture effect.Granite,
Slate,Sand,Lime stone etc will not produce same sound. Some occassion I have observed
that 'sound' did not help the climbers .they felt and narrowly escaped .Sound of a driving
piton is one of the criteria of safe piton driving. What should be other important factor in such situation (reffered to original question)a climber could concentrate which give more security though safety is not at all fullproff matter.
