This weekend I had a wonderful opportunity. The climbing gym where I workout was taking their portable climbing wall to The Colorado Springs Deaf and Blind school. I jumped at the chance to help out. It was such a joy to introduce climbing to these kids. All of them were so full of energy and excitement to try something new.

Way to go!!! Thats such a great gift that we as climbers have, is the gift of teaching someone else, anyone, something that will give them happiness, confidence, and give them a "can do" attitude!! Good Job, Brother!

Sounds like a great time!  Glad you had the opportunity to be involved.

You know, I had an opportunity to help a little bit with the Georgia Camp For The Blind, with many others. In which I donated a few holds for their climbing tower called Ians Tower. I love to help, even though I can't do as much as I'd like. So, I love to hear about people helping out like this.

that sounds really neat.  this may sound a bit insensitive (though i certainly don't intend for it to be), but i bet i'd be impressed by how well some of the blind climbed.  i'm always amazed at how well people, and especially kids, overcome situations like that.

You know thats so true! It really amazing how well they adapt to a new environment! They smile on their face and the happiness they have during and after climbing is priceless!!!

It is not nearly the same thing, and I don't mean it to be, but something we do occasionally in the gym is to climb blindfolded.

Have your belay partner or a friend tell you where the next handhold or foothold is and how to get to it.  It will really work on your feel and control on the wall and really makes your partner on the ground concentrate on route analysis.

The first time I thought of this and decided to try it we had been climbing about 90 minutes in the gym and I tried it on a 5.8+ with not 1, but 2, overhangs on it I had to climb over. LOL

Talk about a challenge, especially when you're spotter on the ground goes "Grab the red rock with your right hand" and I'm going "I can't SEE the red rock, remember."  hehe

It is fun though.

You'll have to give it a try sometime, although I don't know if outdoors on real rock is a good idea.  hehe

That's awesome! I myself have this opportunity through my work. Yey work. My work lets me do anything I want so long as it's helping the community somehow and they'll pay me to do it. =]
SO, I obviously choose rock climbing as my project.
Can't wait to get my youth to the climbing gym.
