Come out and be a participant of the first trail day ever conducted at Horse Pens! The Schultz family has been gracious over the years in allowing thousands of climbers to experience the amazing bouldering on their land; and now we have an opportunity to show our appreciation for their generosity.

This event is an Access Fund Adopt-a-Crag event, sponsored by the SCC and the team from University of Alabama - Birmingham.

Horse Pens 40 Trail Day - Saturday, July 12th, 2008
Access Fund TeamWorks event
Location - Horse Pens 40, near Steele, AL (www.hp40.com for directions)
Meet in front of the Horse Pens Cafe at 9:00 am

Activites for the day will include mulch spreading, shoring up badly eroded areas by building rock walls (non-climbable of course, sorry), breaking up spider trails, picking up trash, and cleaning holds.

Bring work clothes, gloves, boots, wheelbarrows, tarps (for dragging mulch), shovels, rakes, etc. if you've got 'em. And of course, don't forget your climbing shoes for some glorious sloper sliding after working up a sweat.

Lunch will be provided by Guthrie's of Jacksonville, AL - big thanks to Brad Lee, owner and self-professed "chicken finger snob".

Mr. Schultz has graciously offered to waive the day fee for all participants of the trail day; and for any interested in camping Saturday evening, he will waive the camping fee for that night as well. Many thanks to him for this courtesy.

The day's plan of attack will focus on the following areas:
1) Mulletino Boulder--build rock retainer wall, level out badlly eroded areas, and spread mulch from Lowdown problem to Mulletino problem; this will be a major area of attention and labor.
2) Millipede area--spread thick layer of mulch through entire corridor from Bum Boy to The Flow, and also out to Squeeze Play.
3) The Crown Boulder--install landscape ties to break up and divert water runoff, also spread mulch.
4) Restoration of various main trails--marking off with boundary stones and fallen timber to discourage spider trails.
5) Various other boulders will have mulch spread at the base to help curve the rapid erosion that is taking place.

As you can imagine, this is a beefy list of activity--the more people we have available to accomplish it, the better our chances of success. Please commit to showing your support for the sport we love so much--this is a prime opportunity to GIVE BACK and help maintain one of the best bouldering areas in the country.

We will have prizes to give away randomly to volunteers, and some sweet loot for our hardest working volunteers; big thanks to Lee Means and Mammut for supporting the event with amazing gear.

Don't forget lunch will be provided by Guthrie's of Jacksonville courtesy of Brad Lee--some of the best chicken fingers and fries you'll ever have, with sweet tea to refresh the gullet.

Finally--TOOLS. We will need every shovel, pick, rake, tarp, wheelbarrow, pair of gloves, safety glasses, yoke of oxen, etc. possible; so please don't hesitate to bring it if you have it. Be sure to slap some duct tape with your name on it on your tools to make sure you get your stuff back

I would love to make this trip but my wife is bowling in a bowling tournament that day and I'm supposed to be going with her to the tournament.

I'll talk with her and maybe see if I can get another buddy of mine to come down with me if she is ok with me making the trip.
