Hey all, I'm new to climbing and I am completely hooked. I've been going almost religiously and it's finally time for me to buy my own harness. I have my own shoes and chalk bag good to go. I am debating between a Black Diamond Momentum SA, AL, or Phoenix. I have found the AL for $33, the SA for normal price at $59, and Phoenix also normal, at $65, all on Amazon. That's my debate right now. Should I also pick up a locking carabiner? Thanks for your help and if you could offer any extra gear tips, etc, that would be great!

The momentum is the better of the bunch for the price. You will definatly need a locking caribiner, shoes and chalk bag to start. The most imortant thing you need to get though is a mentor.

you are DEFINITELY going to need a locking biner. i'd say go ahead and get 2 locking HMS/pear biners and one or two locking-D biner(s). you will eventually be in need of more than that, but 3-4 lockers to start will be more than enough to suffice for gym and occassional outdor TR if someone else has other necessary gear. did you already get a belay device to go with the lockers? if not, BD's ATC is good as a tube style belay device.
-
as for your harness, BD makes good stuff across the board, but here's where i insert my obligatory plug for misty mountain if you're interested in a high quality harness.
-
glad you got the shoes and everything worked out. another item of worthwhile investment before you head outside is a helmet (it's a lot cheaper than trying to get a surgeon to piece your head back together - not to sound morbid, but people take the helmet issue too lightly, i think)
-
climb well, be well

As far as a harness, I have and really love the misty mountain cadillac. For the price, it the best for all day comfort.

I've had a Momentum AL for 3 years and found it quite comfortable. Since your going to get a locking carabiner I would get an ATC/belay device as well. Sometimes you can find good prices here www.allclimbinggear.com

 Like  Chilli said,

I agree with Chilli, get a helmet for sure. Oh, and get one thats a new light model and not the old heavy one like I have on, haha
