Lets talk cordage for a minute, what is the right diameter for prussicks, equalettes, and anchor building. Further more what is the right lengths for each.

John Long's Anchors 2nd ed. covers that subject in detail that you would definitely appreciate. i generally use 7mm elaquette (same for cordalette, which i have traded out for elaquette use) . many people suggest 8mm, many others say 7mm will suffice just fine. my elaquette was made of about 21ft of cord closed to a loop with fishermans (i went with 21ft b/c the little extra is taken up with my triple-fisherman's & extra tails for slippage - which i really haven't had a problem with). so on lead i carry two small 7mm prussik loops and my elaquette. needless to say, the elaquette can be disassembled and cord used for other applications (which is why some people make the strong argument for 8mm cord).

to be honest, i don't remember how long i cut them. i think they were 2.5-3ft straight so that they made 1-1.5ft loops. i have two of those, which do the trick just fine for any application i've needed including ascending a rope if need be.

i use 2m of 8mm tied into a sling with two stopper knots to adjust the size of the loop. it works fine as a sling and as a prussik for me. but i am getting some 7mm slings of various sizes in a few weeks.
