yesterday i found an old quarry about 2 miles from my home and it has some exellent climbing. i founded about 3 routed and i can se potential for about 8 more. the only problem is its dirty and full of rubbish. the rock faces are a little hard to get close to as there are brambles in the way but i can get there after a few scratches.
the climbs are quite daunting for me as it is sandstone and alot of the rock breaks off or doesnt look safe. anyone got any ideas on how i could go about climbing it when its like this?

#1 - With one or more climbing partners. If you or they get hurt there is someone to get assistance. I saw more than one is better so someone can stay with the injured party.

yeah, i'd say bring some friends, stay on top-rope, belay away from the face, and have some fun. watch out for getting busted though. a lot of times the land-owners are corporations and are so worried about getting sued (if someone gets injured) that they try to get pretty strict enforcement for trespassing violations.

you lucky bastard. i'd love to find a nearby abondoned quarry (that's not all full of water) to climb. there's a quarry nearby here (still active) that i keep dreaming about turning into a small local climbing park someday.

First of all, the rock ( limestone ) in that quarry is stress-fractured from all the blasting and drilling, its really dangerous and unstable.
Along time ago, when I was extreme rappelling, a friend and me were rappelling in a quarry and I was going to rapp all the way to the water without touching the wall and upon the first push-off, my foot slipped and I lost my momentem and swung back to the wall and the block my foot touched was as big as a bus and it was sitting on a smaller block and when I touched it with my foot it moved. Alot of the rock there is very unstable. So beware!!
Just my two cents!

that's a good point, brad. i didn't even really take that into account. i thought of the lose rock, but not the more hidden stress fractures that the quarry is probably full of. maybe that quarry climbing idea isn't the best one after all.

There are a lot of strip mine sites where I am originaly from and it is the same way. There are tons and tons of great walls but the rock is just to chossy. Definitely wear some dome pro. on climb and on belay.
