Heath, I don''t remember where I read it now, it is in one of my books at home, but the original reason for that rule from what I read was that protection was so poor in the beginning that a leader falling = his death.
So the leader must never fall was a life saving philosophy more than anything else.

Welcome to the world of climbing!
Well... you''re taking the right steps so far! The site you''re on has a great realm of info for all that you need... check out the "INFO" section above. Also, check out these sites:
Get to know your knots... and just watch people at the gym. Wherever you are, most climbers are pretty friendly and don''t mind giving you pointers or picking up your belay. You can learn alot from them. Just remember to be patient with the learning process and the muscle development... it takes time to build up all of those gripping and stabilizing muscles but they will come. Have fun, live strong, and know that your best exercise is just to climb! God bless... hope this helps!

You can ask me anything you want, but the best way to get started is to go to the gym and just start bouldering around to get the feel and get someone there to work with you. Most gyms have people that will help you get started. Learn techniques and worry about centering your body weight and balancing, using your legs for power and also, learn how not to overgrip, as this will wear you down quicker than anything and causing you to get that pumped forearm burn that can shut you down for a considerable rest.

Another couple of things to consider are:
It's harder than it looks so I would definitely limit it to 2-3 days a week as you start to allow your body to adjust to using muscles you aren't used to using.
Learn to belay properly and be a willing belayer instead of just a "route hog" as we call them at our gym.
As the others mentioned it is a great sport and a very friendly group of people so relax and have fun.

ilamabangin, How's your progress? Our gym has a ladies class series on Thursdays and runs for 4 weeks. Also it's ladies night. Oddly they don't have a guys night. Hmmm Listen to your body about the 3-4 day of working out. Easy yourself into it. Don't want to get over use injuries.

Definitely use this site as a resource to help you understand the fundamentals of climbing. Rock climbing is exciting and it's one of those things where when you starting climbing more , you do things you never knew your body could do. Remember it's not going to be easy at first, so practice, practice, PRACTICE. Find a few problems and stick to them & watch other climbers. Watching other climbers will help you with technique and help you understand the different forms of climbing.
If you find yourself really enjoying climbing, i would recommend buying a pair of climbing shoes, because they make all the difference. Most gyms have used crappy ripped shoes and if you ask me, climbing shoes make a big difference when your climbing chips that are as small as a penny. Find a hangboard there and use that every time you go there to build your arm strength and make sure you stretch before you climb.
Good luck and PLEASE, don't be afraid to ask questions on here. If you ever have any questions send me a message!

Yup, Learning to fall is an important aspect of climbing. Even more important, at least with bouldering, is how to land.

Thats what holds people back with leading, is the fear of falling. Practice your falls, take a fall on lead, on purpose and learn how to caculate the fall. More than likely, you're going to fall at some point, learn how to deal with it. Focus and stay focused.
