Purchasing your Active Protection is the same as buying any Climbing Gear. You need to assess your needs, and buy the right tools that will be most helpful in your climb. Here are some tips on which Active Pro will be ideal to use on your next Climbing activity.
-
The disadvantage of an Active Pro is that it can be bulky or heavier than Passive Pros. Choose cams that are lighter, but still have the strength. There are brands that already came out with light weight cams.
-
Cams with larger placement range can be more useful because of its flexibility in use which allows you to carry fewer pieces, but this device can also be heavier. Moreover, more pieces may be useful in a long or difficult pitch. Decide which would help you more even with its downside.
-
Ensure stability of the cams you’ll purchase to prevent it from “walking”.
-
Choose cams that will prevent you to suffer from rope drag. Ask dealers and users on their experience with different products.
-
Cams with rigid stems are very sturdy. Its durability will guarantee confidence in your climb, but is not ideal to use on horizontal placements.
-
Purchasing different sets of pro is not ideal. Not only is it impractical, but also very costly. Instead, buy one full set and familiarize yourself with this one brand of cams. Mastery of your gear would make your climb easier.
Active Protection can be much versatile than Passive Pros, but it may also backfire and “walk” out of cracks. It is also pretty much expensive. It is recommended that you try out Passive Pros first to learn and get used to placing these carefully. This is also a cheaper alternative. Gradually, you may add cams in your gear. Experiment on the different types of protection, and decide which will suit you best.
