Bouldering Competitions
Among the different climbing competition formats, it is the Bouldering Competitions that received prominence and garnered success in recent years. There are 300 Bouldering Competitions held annually around the world.
Bouldering involves climbing short routes without any use of safety systems such as harness and ropes. High strength moves are therefore needed to ace a climb. For protection, crash pads are placed on the ground to serve as a cushion in case of a fall.
Despite the risks involved, Bouldering Competitions continue to attract climbers and spectators alike. These are noted for their dynamic nature, fast pacing, and spectator appeal.
Routes
In indoor Bouldering Competitions, each route, commonly known as a problem, is less than 12 feet high. A problem usually measures around eight feet. For each problem, it takes less than 12 movements. For outdoor Bouldering Competitions, the height of the route may be doubled.
Rounds
Each round has five to ten problems that have designated starting holds, boundaries, and finishing holds. There is a qualifying round, semi-final round, and a final elimination. Competing climbers are not allowed to watch the others tackle the problems.
Scoring
A series of boulder problems that have rest periods in between is given to a climber. Climbers are scored cumulatively with the total score as the final score. The total score is also used to determine which climber goes to the final round.
Forms
There are two common forms of Bouldering Competitions. Day competitions, which have 30 problems at the maximum, are held for one to two hours. Aggregate competitions, on the other hand, last for one to four months with about 150 problems. More difficult than day competition, climbers are given a wide range of problems in aggregate competitions.
Categories
Like other climbing competition formats, Bouldering Competitions also have categories. These include men, women, junior boys, junior girls, amateur, and professionals.
Before entering Bouldering Competitions, competing climbers have to undergo power training. They have to develop their footwork, improve their body positioning and techniques, master body control, and build up their balance. Bouldering Competitions entail strong moves whilst climbing short routes without the use of ropes so proper training is required.

Bouldering Competitions are a little different when they are held outdoors, especially in the south.
The grades go something like this:
Beginner=V0-V2
Intermediate=V3-V5
Advanced=V6-V8
Open=V8+
Masters = age 40 and up ( any grades )
This is an example of the grades for a competition called " Chandler Mountain Challenge "
This competition is held at Horse Pens 40 in Alabama.
