Climbing Helmets - Parts and Features
A helmet is an important safety equipment used in Rock Climbing. Its primary purpose is to protect the head of the climber from falling debris or climbing equipment, hard impacts in case of a fall, and other accidents. It should not be disregarded. In general, there is no legitimate reason for not wearing a Climbing Helmet, especially in outdoor climbing such as multi-pitch and ice climbs. Bear in mind that for a potentially dangerous activity like Rock Climbing, you always need to take safety into consideration.
There are many kinds of Climbing Helmets. In this section, know the different components and features of a typical Climbing Helmet:
- Hard plastic is one of the materials that can be used for the outer shell. A plastic helmet is lightweight and has a strong shell. Other materials that can be used are polycarbonate, carbon, fiberglass, ABS, and polyethylene.
- If the outer shell is made of material that can protect the head from impacts and falling debris, the inner shell usually has lining and padding to provide comfort. It is also designed to keep the impact from being concentrated on only one portion of the head. You should be comfortable in wearing your helmet; otherwise, it will just be a nuisance.
- Fit is a very important factor. Straps and adjustable buckles can help you in finding a Climbing Helmet that can provide the right fit. For instance, a chin strap helps in holding your helmet in place. It should be securely buckled at the throat. Adjust the buckles in such a way that the straps are not too tight or loose. One indication that the straps are adjusted correctly is if they form a Y shape around the ears.
- If you are climbing in warm areas, consider buying a helmet with considerable number of air vents.
