Rock Climbing Quickdraws
Written by: Lucreid
Quickdraws, also known as Runners, is a common tool used by Rock Climbers to allow the rope to be pulled towards the center and to allow it to run smoothly with less resistance from the Belay point to the Climber.
Quickdraws are made up of two Carabiners connected by a sewn loop sling made out of durable webbing. The length of the sling may vary since a longer Quickdraw may be useful in Rock Climbing yet it may be too long for typical Traditional Climbing or Sports Climbing enthusiasts.
The Carabiners in Quickdraws are usually paired off as a Straight-Gate Carabiner and the other would be a Bent-Gate Carabiner. The rope is always attached to the Bent-Gate since it reduces the friction on the rope by avoiding contact with any dents or imperfections attained by the other Carabiner during its normal use. Some experienced Climbers make their own Quickdraws because of the level of customization that can be made in Quickdraws is limitless; some Carabiners are paired to meet certain qualities or features that meet any specific situation.
Examples are:
-
Tube-gate Carabiner the most commonly used tube-shaped Carabiner, this offers an all-around performance and useful in any application. Its drawback, though, is that its heavier than the usual Carabiner.
-
Wire-gate Carabiner pretty much the same with the Tube-gate Carabiner, only lighter. However, some people find might find this odd since the Wire-gate looks flimsy and easy to break.
-
Straight-gate Carabiner a standard gate for a Carabiner which works for nearly every application. This Carabiner is usually used to be attached on bolts or protections.
-
Bent-gate Carabiner the Carabiner that is used to clip the rope to. But then of course there are some pre-made Quickdraws that offer the best possible results.
