The Banff Mountain Grants Program is still on the lookout for projects that, “communicate the stories of mountain landscapes as places of ecological, inspirational and cultural value, and that celebrate the
spirit of adventure.”
Interested individuals or organizations may apply for grants of up to $5,000 Canadian as long as their particular projects, “creatively interpret the environment, natural history, human heritage, arts, philosophy, lifestyle, and adventure, in and of the mountains.” Parties have until June 1 to submit their applications.
Aside from the creative interpretation of the things related to the mountains, projects should also have a communications component such as films, literature and photography so that they could be brought before a public audience.
The first granting program of its kind, the Banff Mountain Grants Program is, “committed to helping people share their mountain experience with a public audience,” according Mountain Culture director, Bernadette McDonald.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced last April 18 the recall of a Camming Anchor produced by the Colorado Custom Hardware (CCH) Inc.
Approximately 4,100 of t he Camming Anchors produced by the Laramie, Wyoming-based company has been put on a “voluntary recall” since according to the statement released by the CPSC, “the cables that support climbers using the devices can fail, causing climbers to fall.” The recall was made after the CCH Inc. received one report of the device dubbed as “Alien Cams”, failing a climber after using it.
Everyone who purchased the device are asked by the CPSC to, “stop using these devices immediately.” Aside from that, they are enjoined to contact the CCH for instructions on how to have the devices repaired.

A 71 year-old Russian climber is attempting to set a record for the oldest person to climb the Everest without the aid of Sherpas.
Boris Korshunov and his four-man team of Russian climbers star ted their ascent of the world's highest peak on April 12. It was made to coincide with the 45th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's pioneering space flight, of which Korshunov was a part of the team which brought Gagarin to space.
Korshunov, who still works at the Russian Space Industry to this day, is an experienced climber, having done his first climb in 1954. Since then, he has climbed more than 70 peaks that are higher than 7000 m.
His team is led by Nickolay Totmjanin and they are accompanied by their fellow Russians Serguey Surmonin and Alexey Bolotov, all of which are also experienced climbers. Bolotov already climbed Everest twice on 1988 and 2002 while Totmjanin did it in 2003.

Access Fund was created in 1989 by the American Alpine Club, “to raise, hold and allocate funds for access support projects and resources,” according to their history found in their website. Aside from purchasing lands, AF also provides financial and legal resources to local climbers' coalitions and the construction of reduced impact trails among other things.

Two countries are vying for the chance to make history in their respective homelands by making firsts on Mount Everest.
The Philippines is aiming to make its first Everest climb since the team of Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary first reached its summit in 1953. The Philippine contingent is divided into two contenders. One camp chose to go alone with a non-Filipino team and reach the summit this year. Meanwhile the other chose to make a reconnaissance expedition first before finally attempting to reach the summit next year.
Romeo Garduce, an information technology expert, left the Philippines last March 3 to pursue his Everest dream. He is reported to have joined a three- to five-member team composed by veteran climbers and escorted by sherpas. He is expected to reach the summit by spring.
On the other side of the camp is the 1st Philippine Mount Everest Expedition team. It is composed of 14 climbers including expert climber and former transportation undersecretary Art Valdez, who is leading the expedition. However, they will only be having a reconnaissance expedition this year and prepare for the summit climb next year.
Meanwhile, Brazilians are aiming to set their own milestone on Everest. Paulo and Helena Coelho are going to attempt to be the first Brazilians to reach the summit without the help of sherpas and without oxygen. They believe that it is the only way that the climb to Everest will pay off. If they succeed, Helena Coelho will also set another record by being the first female Brazilian climber to reach the summit of the highest mountain in the world.
However, another Brazilian woman, Ana Elisa, has the chance to do just that. Either way, it will be a win-win situation for Brazilians if any of those women succeed.
