A mountain accident summary of mountain rescue teams marked 2005 as the highest number of deaths on record in the Lake District. There were 19 fatalities out of the 395 incidents in 2005 that t he Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association attended.
10 out of 19 fatalities were people who had collapsed with medical problems, mostly heart-related. There were two rock-climbing deaths and four people who died after falling while hiking.
It comes as the association starts a major campaign to raise awareness of the work done by the volunteers in the area. It also said that there were only two cases wherein companions attempted resuscitation. It has then served as a warning for people to learn life support skills.
Because of this, a campaign is being run which will include 50,000 posters to be put up across Lake District. Likewise, cards will also be given for some advices on what to do if a mountain rescue team is needed. Their main objective is to avoid delays in sending out correct resource and equipment.

Sean McColl brought home gold in the recently concluded Youth World Championships Junior Division held last weekend in Imst, Austria. Winning both in lead climbing and speed, this 19 year old fro m Vancouver also won at the Youth World Championships in 2002, 2003 and 2004. He has finished as high 11th in the Adult World Cup.
Taking home a silver medal as well in the same category is 15 year old Tiffany Hensley. She is the first North American to ever win an event at the World Championships.
The World Youth Championship is organized by the Oesterreichischer Alpenverein (OeAV) together with UIAA Climbing in accordance with the UIAA Climbing general and lead regulations.

The Greek Island of Kalymnos is once again welcoming the International Petzl Rock Trip Fest from October 25 to 30, 2006. Known as a climbing paradise, Kalymnos has nearly 1000 routes of perfect limestone fea
turing stalactites, colonettes, vertical slabs, roofs and fantastic caves. Kalymnos is now considered as one of the must-visit climbing destinations because of its dedication to sport climbing and its 30 developed areas which features beautiful, well-bolted, moderate routes.
The said event will be organized by the Kalymnos Tourism Office.
Over 500 people from 18 countries came in the event held last 2004. This year, participants can expect more climbing! There are ultimate routes developed for pro men and women, a Flash Contest which is open to everyone, films, slideshows, and parties and of course, a whole lot of climbing.
Kalymnos is a Greek island located in the south-eastern Aegean Sea.

Tevis Shaw, a climber from Lexington, fell to his death from a 100-foot cliff while camping at Red River Gorge. Shaw’s head hit a rock after the fall. Along with Shaw in this camping trip were El izabeth Dostart, Addison Stith and Pilar Belendez-DeSha. The camp site was located at Hen’s Nest area, off Sky Bridge Road, in Wolfe County.
The group woke up at around 5 am to find that Shaw was not at the campsite. Thinking that Shaw looked for a place to relieve himself, they went back to sleep. Hours later, they woke up and Shaw was still unseen.
Stith found Shaw’s flashlight on the ground at the top of the cliff. Shaw’s body was found below the cliff.
Red River Gorge is a canyon system on the Red River located in Kentucky. It offers sandstone cliffs, rock shelters, waterfalls and natural bridges.

The 2006 Rock Master Climbing Competition will be held at Arco, Trentino on September 1 to 3, 2006. This once a year event, which began since 1986, is the single competition which encompasses the entire hist
ory of sports climbing. Enthusiasts from all over the world gather every first weekend of September to witness the most important competition of the year, the Rock Master Trophy which will be on Saturday, 2 pm.
Climbers from all over the world will participate. There will be an awards ceremony on September 1 at the Casino Municipale of Arco. Athletes most distinguished at the crag and best competition climbers from the 2004-2005 season will be honored in the said ceremony. Two international prizes will be given away, the “Salewa Rock Award” and the “La Sportiva Competition Award”. The winners will be selected by the most important climbing magazines in the world.
Aside from the Rock Master Trophy, another competition that enthusiasts look forward to is the Speed Competition and Sint Roc Boulder Contest.
Tickets will go on sale on Saturday at 1 pm and on Sunday at 8:30 am.
