The week-long Gritstone Season started with E7 ascents from Lucinda Hughes’s Deathwatch (E7 6b) climb in Ilkley, Yorkshire to Pete Robbins and James Chaffee’s Masters Edge (E7 6c) climbs in Millstone.
<
br> Starting the season on Thursday, Hughes’s ascent was excellent. Come Friday, Lucy Creamer made a trio of ascents at Millstone in the Peak District with a Toploader (E7 6c).

Meanwhile, Robbins finished his climb of the Master Edge in his second try after surviving a fall from high up on his first one. McHaffie, on the other hand, was almost a few moves off the top when he realized he was slightly bleeding and decided to downclimb the route. After 20 minutes, he went back and finished a complete no-fall ascent.

Climbing yogi, Jason Magness, 30, has found slacklining as a new yoga prop. Slacklining is an activity for rock climbers and thrill seekers in which they try to walk on a makeshift tight rope raised off the ground. Magness discovered that using slacklining while practicing yoga made him more centered. He said slacklinng can improve many things such as focus, breathing, balance, control of the bandhas, and even one’s sense of humor. Magness said, “Your mind has to be engaged or else you fall off”. Slacklining is very good in finding out where balance comes from.

Magness tries more difficult yoga poses in slacklining. He and his friend Sam Salwei are working on a DVD explaining yoga and slacklining and they are holding workshops on the subject.

(Silver Spring, Md.) – Discovery Channel sends its most advanced high-altitude cameras once again to the world’s tallest mountain to document an epic climb where ambition overrides agony, exhaustion -- and the chances of survival. EVEREST 2: BEYOND THE LIMIT, the second season of Discovery Channel’s acclaimed series, documents the grueling April/May 2007 summit attempt by an international group of climbers. Airing in eight parts, the series makes its world premiere on Tuesday, October 30, at 10PM ET/PT, and airs every Tuesday at 10PM through Tuesday, December 18. Its companion website www.discovery.com/everest received a 2007 “Online Journalism Award” this week for best use of digital media, and it brings visitors an intimate look at the dangers on the mountain through interactive Sherpa-cam video-players, games and webisodes.

New this year, beginning November 27 at 11PM ET/PT and airing following the last four episodes of the series, viewers can catch the world premiere of AFTER THE CLIMB, hosted by Phil Keoghan (The Amazing Race). This four-part series features amateur climbers from the 2007 climb, joined by an illustrious pantheon of Everest mountaineers, for a candid conversation about climbing the mother of all mountains, their individual climb experiences, their motivations and concerns about attempting something so dangerous, whether technology and willpower are enough in the face of the power of nature, whether any of them could survive without the Sherpas, and more.

The 2007 climbing season was the busiest yet, as more climbers than ever before faced the extreme conditions on Everest in an attempt to fulfill a dream. Seven lost their lives, most did not reach the summit, and those who did will never be the same.

For EVEREST 2: BEYOND THE LIMIT, a 17-member production team followed an expedition of climbers and professional mountain guides, organized and led by New Zealander Russell Brice. Throughout the eight-hour series, viewers go on a journey with the climbers, gaining a unique insight into the physical and mental strength needed to conquer Mount Everest. High-resolution Sherpa-cams give viewers a unique insight into the dangers of the mountain and what climbers go through for the chance to briefly stand on top of the world.

Returning this year are asthmatic Iron-Man competitor Mogens Jensen from Denmark, who once again tries to summit without supplemental oxygen, and Hollywood motorcycle enthusiast Tim Medvetz, who had to be talked into turning back last year only 350 feet below summit. Joining them are several climbers new to EVEREST: BEYOND THE LIMIT, including Katsusuke Yanagisawa of Japan who, at 71 years old, wants to become the oldest man ever to summit Everest; Monica Piris, from England and the team’s high altitude doctor; Betsy Huelskamp, a Los Angeles-based journalist who interviewed Medvetz after his failed 2006 attempt and was inspired to try the climb herself; David Tait, attempting a world-first double traverse to raise money for a charity close to his heart; and Phurba Tashi, Himalayan Experience’s most experienced Sherpa who accompanies Tait. Other climbers include Rod Baber from England and California physician Fred Ziel.

Discovery Channel’s award-winning EVEREST: BEYOND THE LIMIT fan site, www.Discovery.com/Everest, will once again feature immersive Sherpa helmet-camera segments, this year with even greater functionality. Visitors can also watch webisodes, meet the climbers through video profiles and interviews, explore Mount Everest through video clips from each camp and read exclusive journals from crew members who also risked their lives to tell the story of their fellow climbers.

EVEREST: BEYOND THE LIMIT is produced for Discovery Channel by Tigress Productions. Dick Colthurst is the executive producer for Tigress. Mark Allen is the executive producer for Discovery Channel.

Clearfield, Utah – Last weekend, Petzl America and the Red River Gorge Climber’s Coalition (RRGCC) made history with an unprecedented effort to preserve climbing and recreational access in eastern Kentucky. By joining forces for this year’s annual Rocktoberfest fundraiser and climber’s festival, Petzl and the RRGCC raised over $32,000, more than tripling the initial goal of raising up to $10,000 for the RRGCC, and rendering a ten-fold increase over the event’s earnings in 2006. Fundraising power was bolstered by a $10,000 matching grant from the Petzl foundation, providing added incentive for climbers to pitch in for climbing and recreation access in the Red River Gorge area.

Fundraising by climbers to preserve access is making national headlines, with this year’s RocTrip/Rocktoberfest’s philanthropy efforts piquing the interest of NPR’s “It’s Only A Game”. A segment covering this year’s Rocktoberfest event is slated to run on the nationally broadcast radio program on October 27th. Globally, the event generated buzz on 8a (www.8a.nu), the most widely trafficked sport-climbing website, which now spotlights the Red River Gorge as a world-class climbing destination.

In 2004, climbers and advocates of the RRGCC purchased the Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve, a 750-acre plot of undeveloped land now being sustainably developed for climbing, hiking, mountain-biking, and human-powered recreational access. From October 12th to14th, 2007, an international crowd of nearly 1,000 climbers gathered for a weekend of clinics, competitions, and celebration, while raising awareness and funds that will cover the RRGCC’s annual mortgage payment to protect the Pendergrass-Murray Preserve. Without funding for the $29,000 annual mortgage payments due through year 2013, the Preserve faces potential acquisition by interested oil developers, which would shut down climbing on the land.

“This year’s Petzl RocTrip showed what can be done when a company with heart and soul gets behind something it believes in,” said Robb Shurr, Director of Marketing and Business Development for the Access Fund, a national non-profit organization dedicated to keeping climbing areas open and preserving the climbing environment. “Having places to climb is fundamental to Petzl’s business, but they took it one step further and got behind a local access issue with national importance and really pushed for success. It’s exactly this sort of involvement, vision, and stewardship that will keep climbing and recreational areas preserved and viable for the future. The Access Fund has always been proud to have Petzl as one of its biggest and longest standing partners—we’re especially proud after seeing the success of this year’s RocTrip.”

“We owe the success of this event to the local community - the volunteers, the RRGCC Board, area businesses, and the one thousand plus people who came out and put dollars down in support of the Pendergrass-Murray Preserve,” said John Evans, Marketing Director for Petzl America. “I highly recommend other outdoor companies include this outstanding grass-roots event in their outreach programs for 2008. I guarantee Petzl will be back to support this great cause.”

The success of Petzl RocTrip/Rocktoberfest 2007 was supported by The Access Fund, Avery Brewing Company, Five Ten, Keen, the climber-friendly Miguel’s Pizza, La Sportiva, Prana, Red Bull, Red River Gorge Cabin Rentals, Red River Outdoors, Rock and Ice Magazine, Sterling Ropes, and The Warrior’s Way/Desiderata Institute.
