Climbing Magazine Welcomes Anker as Columnist

Climbing Magazine, the journal of record for climbers worldwide, is pleased to announce that Conrad Anker, one of the world’s leading mountaineers, has joined Climbing’s roster of Basecamp columnists. r>
Conrad Anker is renowned for climbing the most technically-challenging terrain in the world. This quest has taken him from the mountains of Alaska and Antarctica to the big walls of Patagonia and Baffin Island and the massive peaks of the Himalaya. His Antarctic experience spans a decade, with first ascents in three regions.

“Conrad brings all the right skills to Climbing Magazine – a strong reporting background, a love for climbing, and a commitment to the climbing life – a tradition started by Michael Kennedy,” said Matt Samet, Climbing’s editor. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to have Conrad on our team.”

About Conrad Anker
Conrad Anker is famous for his challenging ascents in the high Himalaya and Antarctica. He is a member of The North Face climbing team. In 1999, he was a key member of the search team that located the remains of legendary British climber George Mallory on Mount Everest. Conrad graduated from the University of Utah and lives in Bozeman, Montana, with his wife and three sons. He is a board member of the Conservation Alliance, the American Alpine Club, and the Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation. He stays in shape by climbing, running, and skiing.

Ski Mountaineering Trip Kicks Off in South Georgia

A French mountaineering team joined a French expatriate to engage in a sea-supported ski mountaineering expedition to an island in South Georgia. The team is composed of Philippe Batoux, Manu Cauchy (a.k.a . Doc Vertical) and Lionel Daudet. The French expatriate Isabelle Autissier is a famous sailor. The expedition will continue until early January.

As early as now, the team has completed the first ascent of Sheridan Peak, the sixth ascent of Mt. Paget which is the island’s tallest peak, and the third ascent of Surprise Peak.

The team arrived in Grytviken, and then skied up the Nordensjkord Glacier toward the Allardyce Range and Mt. Paget. Two days after, they moved to the base of Mt. Sheridan and climbed a new route named L'arete des 70 ans.

South Georgia is the largest group of islands in the southern Atlantic Ocean known as the South Georgia group.

Two Teams Complete Patagonian Traverse

Two teams completed the second and third ascents of a bold Patagonian traverse in almost three days.

From November 21-23, the team composed of Patagonia veteran Rolando Garibotti and Hans Johns tone, together with another team consisting of four other Italians: Ermanno Salvaterra, Alessandro Beltrami, Mirko Mase and Fabio Salvadei, navigated from Cerro Standhardt to Punta Herron to Torre Egger. Thus, they connected the four peaks. This is the ultimate aim that was never been done until the two teams succeeded.

Thomas Huber and Andi Schnarf first completed the traverse in February 2005 from Cerro Standhardt to Torre Egger, over Punta Herron.

Academy for Global Exploration Climbs in S. Africa

Academy for Global Exploration (AGE) has just returned from a two-month climbing trip to South Africa’s Western Cape Province! Students climbed at Silvermine Crags in Cape Town, spent two weeks bouldering an d climbing in world-famous Rocklands (featured in several issues, including the December issue of Climbing Magazine), two weeks climbing the endless walls in Montagu, and smearing the limestone crags in Oudtshoorn.

Future destinations include (fall - spring)*:

2007-2008: South Africa (bouldering, rock climbing) - TBA (skiing/snowboarding)
2008-2009: Argentina (skiing/snowboarding) - Greece (rock climbing)
2009-2010: Fiji (surfing) - Italy, Sardinia (mountaineering, rock climbing)

* All destinations subject to change. All changes will be posted at www.AGExplore.org.

AGE, based in Ashland, Oregon, in the beautiful Siskiyou Mountains, spends eight weeks of each semester traveling in a foreign country. Their trips are designed to allow students the opportunity to both familiarize themselves with and participate in the local community and culture. Homestays, community service projects, school visitations, and cultural events are incorporated into each semester's curriculum and itinerary.

Natalie Berry Wins 2007 European Youth Series

Natalie Berry, 15, won in the Youth A Female category of the 2007 European Youth Series which culminated at a two-day event at Kranj, Slovenia.

Berry’s win at the Krenj made her get the third h ighest spot in the European Youth Series. She qualified for the finals after finishing her qualifying rounds at 14th place. Climbers had to climb two qualifying routes. During the final route, Berry was four holds from the top. The final route would have been about 7c+/8a, which is the standard route for the girls.

Berry, who is a Glasgow native from Scotland, was one of the youngest climbers in the competition at Krenj.
