CC Members Reject New Hut in the Lakes
FRIDAY, 21 DECEMBER 2007
The EGM on 5 October called by the Committee of The Climbers’ Club sought approval for commencing negotiations to purchase the old Youth Hostel at Stannah Cross near Thirlmere. A majority of those present agreed in principle that negotiations should take place, but not until the whole membership had been consulted and given an opportunity to register their opinion through a postal referendum.
Following the Meeting, a special edition of the Club’s newsletter was published, detailing the proposal and arguments both for and against the purchase. A number of postings on the subject were placed on the CC Forum receiving over 8,000 views and 160 replies, a Club record.
More than half of the 1400 members completed and returned the ballot papers, with 65% voting against the proposal and 31% for. Amongst other questions on the voting form, members were asked if they wanted the search for another hut to continue. An equally large majority voted in favor.
