Monday, 30 June 2008While everyone works his way to the peak, there are other things down there that climbers must not overlook! The Stone Mountain Park offers amenities and attractions not commonly provided in a climbing facility.
Sky Hike - One can almost touch the sky when he completes the 40-foot family adventure course. For beginners, a two-foot course is also available.
Summit Skyr ide - Experience the stunning view of the Confederate Memorial Carving, while taking a high-speed Swiss cable car.
Ante-bellum Plantation and farmyard - The Ante-bellum Plantation is a collection of original buildings from around Georgia built between 1783 and 1875. Furniture and decorations are also displayed.
Scenic Railroad - The Scenic Railroad is a locomotive from the 1940s with open-air cars that take guests on a five-mile excursion.
These are all available in the Stone Mountain Park. It is a venue for history, movies, golf, family leisure, and certainly a great climbing and outdoor experience.

Monday, 30 June 2008In honor of Jim Baldwin, one of the climbing pioneers, climbers will soon be recognized for the role they played in climbing a new route in the Squamish area. The Jim Baldwin Memorial award, sponsored by Mountain Equipment Co-op, is presented annually during the Squamish Mountain Festival.
A three-foot tall steel and granite trophy will be inscribed with the name or names of the winn er or winners and the routes completed. According to festival producer Ivan Hughes, "the idea was to commemorate the ground-breaking climbs of past generations and acknowledging the great climbs that are still happening out there today." The 2008 Squamish Mountain Festival will be held on July 17.
Jim Baldwin was known for his participation in many ascents in Squamish, including the area's first technical climb in 1958. He also wrote the first Squamish climbing guide, made the first ascent of Grand Wall with Ed Cooper in 1961, and traveled to Yosemite Valley where he joined the first ascent of Dihedral Wall on El Capitan in 1962. In 1964, Baldwin died in a rappelling accident at Washington Column.

Sunday, 29 June 2008UClimb and Donner Summit will host a two-day rock climbing event on July 19 to 20. This is sponsored by Mountain Gear and Marmot and will be held in Donner Summit, Nevada County.
The rock climbing event will include instruction from Alpine Skills International guides. Climbers will be able to improve their skills and techniques with the help of professional instructors.
Individuals who are 10 to 17 years old can register for $159, while adult participants will pay $199. Special packages which include rock climbing fee, shoes, harness, belay device, helmet, locking carabiner, and chalk bags are also available at $289 for young individuals and $329 for adults.

Sunday, 29 June 2008Alex Johnson won the gold award at the World Cup Climbing Competition which was held last June 6 to 8 at the fourth stop of Teva Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado. This was the first world cup climbing event in the United States. Climbers from 23 countries gathered in the event.
At only 19 years old, Johnson has already made her mark in the rock climbing industry. Aside from bagging t he gold medal at the world cup, she was also the only female climber to complete three out of four bouldering problems at the American Bouldering Series National Championships in Boulder, Colorado last February.

Thursday, 26 June 2008Rock climbing couple Jaime and Time Rice recently brought their favorite activity for the past seven years indoors with the recently opened indoor rock climbing gym in Athens.
The said facility called Solutions Rock Gym was opened last May at 24 E. State Street. Solutions Rock Gym is open to climbers of all ages and skill levels.
Aside from climbing the walls, particip ants can improve their skills and know more about the sport by taking lessons which are also available at the said gym.
The daily pass at Solutions Rock Gym is $6 for children and students, and $7 for adults. Long-term membership is also available.
