Rock Climber Receives Praise for Saving Mate
THURSDAY, 17 JULY 2008
Submitted By: Diane Vee Hormillada
A rock climber had received praise from rescuers after scaling Arthurs Pass in record time in an attempt to seek assistance for his injured climbing partner last July 15.
According to Rescuer Graeme Kates, the two rock climbers were able to reach the summit. On their way down, one of them fell about 180 meters down Mt. Philistine at around 11:30 in the morning. The injured climber was fortunate that his companion was able to set him up well and had managed to immediately raise the alarm.
The injured climber was brought to Christchurch Hospital for medical attention. He sustained serious pelvic and back injuries and probably a broken leg.
