Keswick Mountain Festival (13-17 May 2009) is offering five lucky TGO readers and their partner the chance to win a set of five pairs of tickets for special talks at the Theatre by the Lake, Keswick, Cumbria.

Mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington has revealed the names of some of the adventurers who will be joining him as a speaker at this year's Keswick Mountain Festival, sponsored by Jenni
ngs and Ordnance Survey.

To celebrate the third successive festival, the organizers have scoured the country looking for Britain’s most talented individuals to inspire the audiences at the Theatre by the Lake. And local activity providers have come up with hundreds of different ways to get up on the fells, out on your bike or away on the water.

Sir Chris Bonington said: "Everyone will be inspired by this year's speakers, from our home-grown climber Leo Houlding to expedition doctor Mike Stroud and from Mark Beaumont, who cycled around the world, to Rosie Swale Pope, who ran around it! We have also taken to the seas this year with Paul Rose, who presents the BBC series 'Oceans' to the ice with polar adventurer Hannah McKeand and to the road with one of our finest ultra-distance runners Jez Bragg."

"Keswick Mountain Festival is a fabulous way to come and try new activities and to hear our new pioneers talk about some of the most magnificent adventures on earth. I am proud to be the Festival patron and I am looking forward to taking part in May."

The unique five-day festival offers outdoor enthusiasts and novices the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of exciting outdoor activities in and around Keswick. A full programme of activities will be online soon.

The prize includes:
• A choice of 5 pairs of tickets to attend special Festival talks with any of our speakers.
• A tour of Jennings Brewery in Cockermouth.
• An Ordnance Survey rucksack complete with a first aid kit, water bottle, scarf, torch and of course a space to store your maps!
• A special limited-edition official Keswick Mountain Festival Buff headwear.

In 2008, the state parks system acquired a tract of land for Chimney Rock State Park that is integral for future access to Rumbling Bald Mountain. The site, just off Boys Camp Road at the western edge of the Town of Lake Lure, has long been used by the public as access for climbing, bouldering and hiking on surrounding public land.

This Rumbling Bald Climbing Access site is being close
d to the public intermittently during February and March 2009 to allow for a significant improvement project. During this time, staff of the state parks system and N.C. DOT will realign the entrance road and create a parking area on the site. Beyond improving access to this area of the state park, the project will protect the natural resource by controlling erosion and protecting vegetation and will improve security and emergency response.

Current plans call for the access site to be closed on weekdays in early February to allow for brush removal and other pre-construction activity. In late February and perhaps in March, more intensive road construction by DOT will require the access site to be temporarily closed on weekdays and weekends. During these intermittent closings, the public will not be allowed on the property nor may vehicles be parked in the vicinity.

For updates on access to the area, you can visit www.ncparks.gov.

A basic/beginners rock climbing day at Mt. Keira will be held on February 21, 2009. Preference will go to new members as participants for this trip.

Mt. Keira (above Wollongong) has a 5 minute walk in (so those lattes can be hot at the crag). There are a lot of climbs around the 14-23 range, with a number of really easy climbs (less than grade 12).

Ideally it would be great
if you could bring climbing shoes (the club does not provide) - or bring shoes that you don't mind getting scuffed with a grippy sole (like joggers or sand shoes).

Participants will meet up at 8am sharp (leave at 8.05am) at the UTS Tower steps in Sydney on Saturday 21st Feb and leave the crag at about 4pm.

For more details on this event, you can visit www.utsoac.org.au.
