CARBONDALE, COLO. - Petzl recently announced that sales of its anodized teal blue Attaché HERAbiner reached the 10,000-unit mark. The manual screw-lock lightweight carabiner that's etched in white with HERA Climb4Life features Petzl's Keylock System that allows for snag free body / gate interface. Introduced in May 2007 as part of the HERA Partner in Action (PIA) program, Petzl donates $1 from ea ch sale to the ovarian cancer non-profit. The HERAbiner retails at $13.95 and can be found at select Petzl dealers. (Visit www.herafoundation.org for details.)

"Sales of the HERAbiner continue to pick up momentum," says John Evans, marketing director for Petzl, who created the HERAbiner program. "The fact that we’ve raised $10,000, one dollar at a time, is testament to the power of community. HERA has always understood that power and has effectively harnessed it in their fight against ovarian cancer."

"For many consumers, given the current economic challenges it may not be possible to write a check to support a good cause," says Lisa Carmichael, interim executive director of the HERA Foundation. "With the Partners in Action program, we're giving them an opportunity to give-back and to raise awareness while they're pursuing their passion."

Petzl has supported the HERA Foundation as a sponsor of the Climb4Life event series since its inception in 2002. In 2007, Petzl USA received the HERA Power of One Award for its support of the organization after the debut of the HERAbiner.

According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), ovarian cancer occurs in one in 72 women. Currently, there is no reliable method of early detection, such as the mammogram for breast cancer. Funding scientific research is therefore vital in decreasing the number of lives lost. The NCI reports that 67 percent of cases are diagnosed after the cancer has already metastasized, when the five-year survival rate is only 30.6 percent. CARBONDALE, COLO. -- The economy may be down, but for the HERA Women's Cancer Foundation's DC Metro Climb4Life event, the numbers are up and rising. The month-long fundraising event kicked off Friday, February 27 at REI in Fairfax, Va. with 430 registered participants. The number of 2009 registrations has already surpasses 2008's final participation numbers and registrations are accepted througho ut the month at www.heraclimb4lifedc09.kintera.org.

Held at Sport Rock and Earth Trek climbing gyms and sponsored by REI and Black Diamond Climbing Equipment, participants have already raised $35,661 for ovarian cancer research and awareness and that number continues to increase. (Visit www.herafoundation.org for the most current numbers.) The 2008 DC Metro Climb4Life event brought in over $58,000 by the end of the event with a total of 370 registered participants. The opening event included appearances by professional climbers as well as this year's recipients of the HERA OSB1 Research Grant, which include: Dr. Marie-France Penet, Dr. Dan Lu and Dr. Yuan Tian, all ovarian cancer researchers from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. Dr. Richard Roden, also from Johns Hopkins, spoke about the importance of funding ovarian cancer research.

A tribute was held for the late founder of the HERA Foundation, Sean Patrick, who passed away in January due to complications related to ovarian cancer.

"Everyone shined flashlights into the sky and yelled a hello to Sean," says Lisa Carmichael, HERA's interim executive director. "It was beautiful."

The closing event will take place on March 28. For more information please visit ww.herafoundation.org. (See schedule of events below for the upcoming March events.)

"Based on the success of 2008, we anticipated a great turn out, but the results so far have far exceeded our expectations," says Rhonda Krafchin, outreach specialist at REI Fairfax, Va. She adds, "Given the current economic environment, it's fair to say that the climbing community views HERA as an important non-profit and they are committed to helping HERA find a solution to ovarian cancer."

Schedule of Events:

New York, NY and Boulder, CO. — According to the recently-released Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) statement, Climbing Magazine (climbing.com) recorded an average per-issue circulation of 43,785 in 2008; this delivers 9.5% bonus circulation over the average circulation stated at the start of the year - equivalent to an additional 34,065 copies.

Climbing Magazine's circulation — the
only ABC-audited circulation in the category — is now at the highest level in more than 5 years, having grown 20 percent in the last two years. Skram Media, publisher of Climbing, acquired the magazine from Primedia in December 2006.

Climbing's 9.5% bonus circulation is in contrast to the performance of the number-two magazine in the same category, Rock & Ice. According to the magazine's Statement of Ownership published in its January 2009 issue, Rock & Ice's average circulation per-issue in 2008 was 26,599, 12% short of their stated circulation at the start the year of 30,075. Rock & Ice's shortfall is equivalent to 27,808 less copies in circulation.

"In this ever-changing media landscape, it is imperative for magazines to respond to the industry's need for accurate and credible reporting of circulation data," said Mark Crowther, CEO of Skram Media. "By committing Climbing to participate in ABC, we're providing our advertisers with the information they need to ensure that their hard-earned ad dollars are reaching the consumers they want."

Climbing's ABC Statement includes the following data and calculations:
• Subscriptions, paid and verified;
• Total paid and verified subscriptions;
• Single-copy sales;
• Total paid and verified circulation;
• Average analyzed non-paid circulation;
• Total paid, verified and analyzed non-paid circulation;

The American Foundation for Children with AIDS (AFCA, www.helpchildrenwithAIDS.org) announced the dates for their United States event, "Climb Up the 50."

"Climb Up the 50" is part of the Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up group of events that support AFCA. Although other events that have been going strong for the past three years have been worldwide, this is a USA-based only event, inviting
outdoor enthusiasts anywhere in USA to participate.

Climb Up the 50 is another "viral event" by AFCA, which means that there is not one location that the event will take place. In fact, hikers, climbers, cyclists, and runners from each of the 50 states will "climb" to the highest peak in their state to show that they are united in fighting AIDS. These individuals and teams will also raise funds for the AFCA by having friends, family, and co-workers sponsor them and their climb. All proceeds will go to American Foundation for Children with AIDS and help HIV+ children in Sub-Saharan Africa by providing them with medication, food and supplies that they desperately need.

Justin Wood, who climbed Denali in 2008 as part of Climb Up the 50 stated, "We felt great joy and pride when, after a very long summit day, we moved to the top and set foot on the 20,320’ summit of North America. We were very excited to use the moment to draw attention to the AIDS epidemic. We are convinced that ending the epidemic is possible. In the meantime, education of and compassion from the general public will help those who have been stricken survive and live good lives."

"We hope to inspire people to see themselves as part of a team on a very long expedition. We hope each will make a long-term commitment to reach our summit goal of helping these young people live fruitful lives. We hope the members of the bigger team to fight AIDS will make the fight against AIDS an ongoing part of their lives by contributing each month, whether $10, $50 or whatever they can afford. That's the hope and commitment we want to pass on to you. If we can reach a goal like summiting Denali under difficult conditions in an arctic environment, we are convinced we can succeed in helping these kids live to see a tomorrow. Let's do it!"

This year, the climbs across USA can take place on any day from May 23 to May 31, 2009. Memorial Day finds itself within that time frame and AFCA hopes that the holiday will be to their advantage in acquiring many people to participate in this exciting event.

You can find the highest peak in your state by visiting the Highpointers Club at highpointers.org.

People interested in representing their state this summer are asked to register on the Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up web site, www.climbupsokidscangrowup.com or call AFCA at (717) 798-8335.
