Boulder, CO - In the third round of the Climbing Preservation Grant Program for 2009, the Access Fund awarded over $11,500 to support local climbing activism and conservation of the climbing environment. Presented three times annually, the Climbing Preservation Grants program provides financial assistance for local climber activism and protection of the climbing environment in the United States. During this third round of grants, the Access Fund is supporting three proposals. The following grants were awarded this round:

National Park Service - Exit Strategies Conference

A grant was awarded to the National Park Service for a 2010 conference on exit strategies of human waste. This conference will include land managers and representatives from major climbing areas facing waste management crises due to high recreational use, such as Denali, Mt. Whitney, Mt Fuji, Rocky Mountain, Tetons, Indian Creek, and Mt. Rainier. Matching funds are being provided by the NPS, BLM, USFS, and American Alpine Club.

Ozark-St. Francis National Forest - Sam's Throne Pit Toilet

Ozark-St. Francis National Forest was awarded a grant for partial funding of a pit toilet at Sam's Throne in Arkansas. The Forest Service and local climbing community have partnered to improve access and camping opportunities, yet the lack of toilet facilities has led to growing environmental damage at the site. The grant is awarded with support of the Arkansas Climbing Coalition, Boy Scouts local climbing committee, Arkansas Parks and Tourism, and Ozark Outdoor Supply.

Dishman Hills Natural Area Association (DHNAA) - Big Rock Road Improvement and Parking

A grant was awarded to Dishman Hills Natural Area Association (DHNAA) to help fund road improvement and parking construction needed to access the newly acquired 80-acre Big Rock parcel, near Spokane, WA. Public access is currently closed until the unmaintained county road is improved and a small parking area is constructed. Access to the area was closed due to climbers and other users blocking driveways of adjacent neighbors in an attempt to park.

The Climbing Academy is regarded as one of the most modern training facilities in the UK and as such, they want to expand this reputation of excellence into youth bouldering squad. With main sponsor Ellis Brighamm, their aim is to establish an elite training programme that will allow young climbers to maximise their potential and for TCA to become nationally recognised as a first class provider o f youth coaching in the UK.

Any young person between the ages of 10 and 16 years old can try out for the squad, which will include both a junior and senior Team. Squad members will receive a structured yet dynamic training programme that will develop, amongst many others things, physical and mental strength, stamina and technique, and will look at issues such as injury avoidance, problem reading, and the pressures faced in competition. As well as in-house coaching, the squad will receive regular training sessions with some of the UK's most respected climbers and coaches.

Squad tryout sessions will run on Sunday, 8th Nov 11.30am to 12.30pm.

For further information and details of squad fees, please contact sam@theclimbingacademy.com.

You don't have to be German, you don't have to wear lederhosen (although you should) - you don't even have to like Schweinsbraten. The only requirement - you MUST love to boulder.

Come celebrate bouldering (please leave the beer at home) with Vertical Endeavors on Saturday, October 24th, 2009 for the inaugural Oktboulderfest. Strictly a bouldering competition, Oktboulderfest 2009 will
be a chance to get together with fellow bouldering aficionados for a day of sending, laughing, and enjoying the gym’s crisp fall temps.

Just like last year's bouldering comp, there will be LOTS of free stuff from climbing companies to dish out in a superb raffle and enough coffee to drown yourself in the morning.

Oktboulderfest is sanctioned by USA Climbing and the American Bouldering Series (www.usaclimbing.org, ABS comps take place all over the country). With five youth and five adult categories, there will be plenty of options for everyone - of all abilities. Climbing competitions are all about having fun within the climbing community and challenging yourself, not about who walks away with the prize. Preregister today.

Denver, Colo. - The 2010 Backpacker Magazine Summit for Someone series officially opened last October 12, 2009, and is looking for participants. As the main fundraising channel for Big City Mountaineers, Summit for Someone has space for 150 climbers and includes a few new features for 2010.

In addition to the standard alpine and glacier climbs, SFS is offering a mountaineering course,
Devils Tower climbing course and a women's specific climb.

Mountaineering Course

After a successful inaugural year on Mt. Sneffels in Southern Colorado, for its second year, the mountaineering course is relocated to Rocky Mountain National Park and will be led by Colorado Mountain School. The course is designed to teach aspiring mountaineers the basics and will culminate in a classic route on a Rocky Mountain National Park peak.

Devils Tower

Devils Tower in Wyoming is the newest addition to the SFS series. Climbers will base camp at Devils Tower Lodge and spend a day in a climbing gym before tackling the rock. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who is interested in learning climbing techniques, as it is a 2:1 climber/guide ratio.

Women's Specific

The women's climb for 2010 will be on Mt Rainier and be led by Rainier Mountaineering International guide Melissa Arnot.

Each climb is lead by well-renowned guide services such as Jackson Hole Mountain Guides, GoTrek Expeditions, Rainier Mountaineering International and Sierra Mountaineering International. SFS climbs are conducted with certified guide services with permits and approval of their respective land-management agencies.
