Harrisburg, PA – The highest peak in Africa will be no match for a confident group of Nike, Inc. employees when they climb Mount Kilimanjaro September 11th -22nd, 2010 for charity. Starting with just a small group of people, Team Just Do It’s effort soon caught the attention of Nike management who has generously agreed to match all employee donations. So far Nike employee donations sum in excess of $30,000.

What Are the Nike Employees Doing?

Team Just Do It is comprised of four women and eight men that will be taking on the challenge to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, www.climbupsokidscangrowup.com/kilimanjaro.html Tanzania later this year. While the expedition is not until September, team members have been hard at work training for this strenuous climb and recruiting sponsors.

The expedition began when some climbing enthusiasts from Nike encountered The American Foundation for AIDS (AFCA) and its Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up event. Seeing an opportunity to help African children with AIDS, the twelve team openings filled quickly as word spread as they registered at: www.climbupsokidscangrowup.com

Nike: A History of Social Responsibility

Nike and its employees have a long history of helping communities across the globe; since the company has 30,000 employees across six continents, it’s safe to say that the entire world is part of Nike’s community. The American Foundation for Children with AIDS is grateful for their help.

“The commitment of Nike and its employees are making a tremendous difference in the lives of thousands of people living with AIDS” states Tanya Weaver, Executive Director of AFCA. “Without their help, these children might not live; with it, they can become productive members of society.”

What Is Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up?

Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up is a set of AIDS charity challenges that include both established and self-directed events. Team Just Do It is participating in Climb Up Kilimanjaro which is an established event, while the Climb Up the 50 and Climb Up the World events allow participants the flexibility to pick a preferred activity and location. Sports like rock climbing, hiking, running and cycling are favorites at these events, but any activity is welcomed. More details are available at: www.climbupsokidscangrowup.com

For those interested in participating in Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up, upcoming events include:

* Climb Up the 50 – June 26th – July 5th
* Climb Up the World – September 18th – 19th
* Climb Up Kilimanjaro – February 5th – 16th, 2011

Funds to Combat AIDS in Africa

The funds raised by Team Just Do It and Nike will be used to support AFCA programs that serve children with AIDS in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe. These programs provide medication, medical equipment, medical supplies and food to children and their HIV+ caregivers.

“On behalf of all of the children that will benefit from their support, I want to express our deep gratitude to Team Just Do It and Nike, Inc.” says Ms. Weaver. “Their generosity will dramatically improve the lives of thousands of children.”

All taps and plumbing is regularly maintained to avoid leaks and dripping taps, and signs remind guests to turn taps off when not in use. Where possible rainwater is used to water plants.
- Waste reduction – All glass, paper, cardboard and plastic is recycled. The park’s purchasing policy includes buying local, buying in bulk and using refillables where possible.
- Keeping it local - A wide range of local produce is stocked in the on-site shop, from local fresh free range eggs to Devon made jams, pickles, chutneys and vinegars.
- Loving the landscape - Hundreds of native plants have been introduced to the park.

MILL VALLEY, CA -- SuperTopo.com, one of the most popular climbing web sites in the world, revealed today the results of the SuperTopo 2010 Editors’ Choice Awards for Rock Climbing Helmet category, listing this year’s best climbing helmets and best value for climbing helmets. The SuperTopo.com staff chose the following winners after extensive field testing in Yosemite, Colorado, and Utah. Each nu t tool underwent extensive side by side tests to evaluate key performance metrics such as comfort, breathability, adjustability, durability, and other factors. The complete climbing helmet review test results for 2010 are available on SuperTopo.com at www.supertopo.com/best/Climbing-Helmet-Review The winners are:

Petzl Meteor 3 – www.supertopo.com/review/Petzl-Meteor-III winner of the Editor's Choice Award for 2010. It was the most solid but for tiny placements, especially in areas with pin scars. According to gear tester Chris McNamara, "The Meteor III was a runaway favorite of all our testers and gets the SuperTopo Editors' Choice award. This is the lightest, most comfortable helmet tested. If you can afford it and are looking for the best (and have the awareness to take proper care of it), go with the Meteor III."

Petzl Elios – www.supertopo.com/review/Petzl-Elios winner of the Best Buy award for 2010. This award is given to a product that balances an extremely high score in our tests and a very reasonable price. According to Chris McNamara, "This gets our Best Buy award because it scores second highest yet costs $35 less than the top-scoring Meteor III. Get the Elios if you want a durable helmet that is relatively light weight and can do anything."

CAMP Armour – www.supertopo.com/review/CAMP-Armour winner of the Recommended award for 2010. This award is given to products that scored very highly, and offered unique capabilities. According to Chris McNamara, "The CAMP Armour is a great all–around helmet. It stays in place (doesn't ride up on your forehead and slide back onto your neck), takes a beating well and has a slim, breathable profile. Not all helmets stay put on your head, but the Armour does."

Mammut Skywalker – www.supertopo.com/review/Mammut-Skywalker-2 winner of the Recommended award for 2010. This award is given to products that scored very highly, and offered unique capabilities. According to Chris McNamaraIan Nicholson, "The Skywalker II is a great buy. For Chris Mac and a few others it was their favorite helmet in the $60 range. It fits well, takes a beating, looks cool and is amply ventilated. If you’re looking for one helmet to fit all your climbing needs – from alpine to sport and everything in between – the Skywalker II is an excellent choice."

DENVER, CO --- The HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation (Health, Empowerment, Research, Awareness) completed another successful HERA Climb4Life event raising over $27,000 for its ovarian cancer research and community grant programs and awareness initiatives. The non-profit’s Fourth Annual HERA Climb4Life Colorado, held June 11 to June 12, 2010, drew 28 volunteers, 74 participants and four professional climbers including Olivia Hsu with Sterling Rope, Jason Kehl with La Sportiva, Alli Rainey with prAna, and Chris Schulte with Black Diamond.

Presented by REI Boulder, Boulder Rock Club and Colorado Mountain School, HERA Climb4Life Colorado welcomed outdoor enthusiasts to hike and climb in and around the canyons and trails of the Boulder area. Inclement weather meant that the climbing activities actually took place indoors at the Boulder Rock Club, but six participants and two volunteer guides braved the elements to complete their planned hike. The event included outdoor skills clinics for the first time, including wilderness first aid basics and a bouldering clinic with the professional climbers. To round out the weekend, the event also featured yoga classes, sports massage, gear giveaways, a screening of the film Higher Ground as well as kick-off and closing event celebrations hosted by Avery Brewing Company and Sublime Catering.

Funds were raised through the individual fundraising efforts of participants and volunteers. This year’s top fundraisers include Maggie Luck, Lee Smith and Cathy Badell, who each won an outdoor gear prize package. The top fundraising team, Team Donna, won REI gift cards to distribute among its members.

“Climb4Life Colorado was, once again, a successful event thanks to the continued support of volunteers, participants and the Boulder and Denver communities,” says Cathy Badell, event chairwoman of HERA Climb4Life Colorado. “A highlight of the weekend was when Maggie Luck, one of the top fundraisers this year and an ovarian cancer survivor, shared her inspiring story of perseverance.”

Maggie was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer in October 2008 and was told she had a 5% chance of survival. Maggie was determined to beat the cancer, and she felt that staying physically active was critical to her recovery. Maggie continued to exercise during her treatment, and incredibly, only seven months after enduring chemotherapy and surgery, she ran a marathon. Maggie has now been healthy and without re-occurrence for over 15 months. Her story reminds us all why we participate in Climb4Life and reaffirms the importance of raising funds for ovarian cancer research and education programs.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in 71 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in her lifetime. Early diagnosis increases the 5-year survival rate to 93 percent, however less than 20 percent of all ovarian cancer is found at the early stage. The mission of the HERA Foundation is to stop the loss of mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, aunts, wives, partners and girlfriends from ovarian cancer. Funds raised support HERA’s cause, including the OSB1 Grant that’s awarded annually to Ph.D. and M.D. fellows at institutions such as Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas in Houston.

The next Climb4Life event is the 9th Annual Climb4Life Utah from September 16-19, 2010. For more information, please visit www.herafoundation.org.
