Nike and Employees to Help African Children

WEDNESDAY, 30 JUNE 2010

Harrisburg, PA – The highest peak in Africa will be no match for a confident group of Nike, Inc. employees when they climb Mount Kilimanjaro September 11th -22nd, 2010 for charity. Starting with just a small group of people, Team Just Do It’s effort soon caught the attention of Nike management who has generously agreed to match all employee donations. So far Nike employee donations sum in excess of $30,000.

What Are the Nike Employees Doing?

Team Just Do It is comprised of four women and eight men that will be taking on the challenge to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, www.climbupsokidscangrowup.com/kilimanjaro.html Tanzania later this year. While the expedition is not until September, team members have been hard at work training for this strenuous climb and recruiting sponsors.

The expedition began when some climbing enthusiasts from Nike encountered The American Foundation for AIDS (AFCA) and its Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up event. Seeing an opportunity to help African children with AIDS, the twelve team openings filled quickly as word spread as they registered at: www.climbupsokidscangrowup.com

Nike: A History of Social Responsibility

Nike and its employees have a long history of helping communities across the globe; since the company has 30,000 employees across six continents, it’s safe to say that the entire world is part of Nike’s community. The American Foundation for Children with AIDS is grateful for their help.

“The commitment of Nike and its employees are making a tremendous difference in the lives of thousands of people living with AIDS” states Tanya Weaver, Executive Director of AFCA. “Without their help, these children might not live; with it, they can become productive members of society.”

What Is Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up?

Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up is a set of AIDS charity challenges that include both established and self-directed events. Team Just Do It is participating in Climb Up Kilimanjaro which is an established event, while the Climb Up the 50 and Climb Up the World events allow participants the flexibility to pick a preferred activity and location. Sports like rock climbing, hiking, running and cycling are favorites at these events, but any activity is welcomed. More details are available at: www.climbupsokidscangrowup.com

For those interested in participating in Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up, upcoming events include:

* Climb Up the 50 – June 26th – July 5th
* Climb Up the World – September 18th – 19th

Funds to Combat AIDS in Africa

The funds raised by Team Just Do It and Nike will be used to support AFCA programs that serve children with AIDS in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe. These programs provide medication, medical equipment, medical supplies and food to children and their HIV+ caregivers.

“On behalf of all of the children that will benefit from their support, I want to express our deep gratitude to Team Just Do It and Nike, Inc.” says Ms. Weaver. “Their generosity will dramatically improve the lives of thousands of children.”
