Valley Sporting Goods
The History behind Valley Sporting Goods
In 1946, when founders Trevor Griffith and Joseph Gere first opened the doors to Valley's original location on 15th and J Streets, the building was shared with the Red Cross and spanned only 800 square feet. Valley Sporting Goods has since relocated and expanded to nearly 49 times its original size currently covering 39,000 square feet. Despite the move and the growth, one thing that hasn't changed is the spirit and philosophy behind the store. Current owners Sheldon and Sandy Spencer still hold onto the values and excellent customer service that Valley was founded upon.
Valley Sporting Goods has become more of a tradition than a business over the course of the past 57 years. Millions of people have rich memories attached to a time when they went to Valley for that special item. For some it was their first ball glove. For others, a pair of snow skis they had been saving for all summer. And still for others, it was the time they stood looking in the mirror, swelling with the pride that comes from slipping on a letterman's jacket for the very first time. That's Valley Sporting Goods, a feeling of pride and commitment that makes our customers the most important people in the world.
As we head into the 21st century, Valley Sporting Goods looks forward to maintaining the tradition that makes it Modesto's Most Interesting Store. Valley will continue to offer our customers the best of both worlds--local ownership and national buying power. Thank you for helping to make us who we are today.
