Product Features
The Black Diamond ATC-XP is a true variable-friction belay and rappel device with wicked holding power. With the ATC-XP, a climber can control how much friction they want while belaying or rapping, which in turn means greater control with multiple rope diameters. Ice climbing with an 8.1mm rope? Use the ATC-XP in high friction mode, pulling the rope over its contoured teeth. Rappelling with a fuzzy 11mm down a granite slab? Use the device in regular friction mode. An extended central web keeps 'biners and ropes properly oriented and reduces kinking. This Black Diamond belay device is such a favorite among climbers that it won the Climbing Magazine Editor's Choice Award. *Assorted colors.

Bottom Line: Black Diamond has made an essential piece of climbing gear essentially better.

I replaced my simple ATC type device with an ATC-XP because I wanted more friction. The ATC-XP has teeth on one side of each of the two slots (see the picture). This provides additional friction which makes rappelling and belaying safer, in my opinion. You can reverse the device and use the smooth side on the "break hand" side if you want a more dynamic belay or a faster rap. I have used my device for about a year (perhaps a four dozen rappels and even more belays) and it shows only minor scratches and nicks. The covering on the wire loop still looks like new. I would recommend this device to students over a simpler type because of the added option of additional friction when needed. The label fell off on one side, but it doesn't detract from the function. It is lighter than a "figure eight" device and doesn't seem to twist the rope. I have used it with 10.2 mm rope (doubled and single rapping), 9.8 mm (single and double rapping)and 9 mm (doubled when rapping) with success. I can't think of any "cons". A good value.
