Metolius Curved Hex Nuts and Hexes
The Metolius Curve Hex has all but replaced the straight-sided Hexes of old! The Curve Hex is a highly versatile piece of pro at a darn good price. Offering four different options per piece with a range that is comparable to a camming device of similar size, these Hexes should be the foundation of any climber's rack. They are incredibly lightweight (extruded 6061 - T6 Al) and about 1/5 the price of quality camming units. By curving the faces, they have opened up a lot of placement options by allowing them to slide past nubbins and irregularities that would block a traditional Hex. The gentle curves also allow the Curve Hexes to cam into position by rotating on the convex face and setting up a triangulations with the concave side. In laymen's terms, they will seat into their placements with tenacious holding power. The wire slings eliminate excess bulk from your rack. For those of you that are new to trad climbing, the Curve Hexes are a great starting point for learning the basics of traditionally-protected routes. It's easy to tell if you have made a sound placement on lead (both visually and by pull testing) or when setting up your top rope anchors. Alpinists will dig 'em cause they are way cheaper to leave at rappel stations. Great protection for first time gear buyers and seasoned vets alike! One additional bonus for those of you who grew up climbing with the original Hexs: They still have that unique/familiar clanking sound on your rack as you hike down the dusty trail.
